Odisha Govt's Decision to Auction Broadcast Rights of Rath Yatra Challenged in High Court

Bhubaneswar: Odisha government’s decision to auction the telecast rights of the famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath in Puri has been embroiled in a legal rigmarole after a PIL challenging it was filed in Odisha High Court in Cuttack.

While Doordarshan, India’s government-run television network, has been live telecasting the hugely popular festival for decades, the state government recently decided to auction the telecast rights. Sree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), the organization mandated with the upkeep and management of the affairs of the 10th-century shrine, invited tenders from experienced broadcasters to pick one of them for conducting the live telecast exclusively.

As per the terms and conditions stipulated by SJTA, the broadcaster that wins the telecast rights will have to share the feed with Doordarshan free of charge.
